AMNESTY BOSS URGES NIGER DELTA YOUTHS TO IMBIBE CULTURE OF PEACE AND NON-VIOLENCE, AS HE BAGS HUMANITARIAN SERVICE AWARD

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Tarela Boroh (Rtd), has advised youths from the Niger Delta region to engage in acts that would promote culture of peace and non-violence in their quest for attention from the relevant authorities, assuring that the federal government was committed to the its new vision for sustainable peace and development of the region.
Gen. Boroh, who was conferred with a Special Humanitarian Service Award on Peace Sports by the Ndokwa people at the on-going fourth edition of Opia Joshua Football Talent Hunt Competition at Kwale Stadium in Ndokwa West local government area of Delta on Sunday, December 10, 2017, organized by Solid Base Youth Development Initiative, was represented by his senior reintegration officer and head of the Presidential Amnesty Vocational Training Centre, Boro-Town Kaiama, Bayelsa State, Mr. Jude Gbaboyor, also enjoined governors in the region to tap into the vitality of the youth through active sports participation.
He noted that the governors have advantage of using sport as a platform to unlock the potentials of their youth, informing that the Presidential Amnesty-Sport for Peace Initiative was launched by his office in collaboration with Sia-One Sports Academy, run by former Super Eagles’ coach, Samson Siasia, to engage ex-agitators in sports, as tool to achieving sustainable peace to allow investments to thrive in the region under an atmosphere of peace and stability, as part of the on-going reintegration/empowerment process of 30.000 ex-agitators.
He hinted that the first batch of 82 beneficiaries have graduated in sports management fundamentals, adding that the Amnesty office would continue to leverage on sport as a veritable tool for peace building and development in the Niger Delta.
Gen. Boroh, maintained that sport programmes, when applied effectively, provide social integration and foster tolerance, helping in generating meaningful dialogue among communities in the region, informing that no fewer than 82 beneficiaries, including selected youths from crisis impacted communities in the Niger Delta that benefitted from scholarships to study sports management in notable institutions such as Johan Cruyff Sports Institute in Barcelona, Spain, among others, as part of the collaboration between the Amnesty office, Sia-One Sports Academy, To Be Connected Nigeria and Joan Cliff Sports Institute of Barcelona.

Gen. Boroh who thanked the organizers for the award on him, commended the sponsor of the football talent hunt event, Hon Opia Joshua, for his foresight, saying that the Amnesty office will support the annual football competition because of its potential of meaningfully engaging the youth in sports, which will contribute to regional integration, sustainable peace and security, being the cornerstones of development in any post conflict environment.
The Amnesty Coordinator however lamented that while many youth from the Niger Delta may have suffered from psychological distresses and other difficult life conditions that would have prevented them from obtaining appropriate education to maximize their potentials, the Presidential Amnesty Programme’s educational empowerment scheme came as a catalyst that has seen hundreds of youth graduating in different fields of human endeavour, either in aviation, science, engineering, automobile, maritime, agriculture, law, fashion, hospitality, among others.
In his brief remark, HRM, King Ateke Michael Tom, the Sekuro 1 of Niger Delta, Amayanabo of Okochiri-Okrika, Rivers state, represented by the National Coordinator of New Dawn, Mr. Didi Ben, had advocated for peaceful co-existence among communities in the Niger Delta and by extension, the country at large, pointing out that without peace, there could be no meaningful development in the region.
Earlier, the sponsor of the tournament and personal assistant to HRM, King Ateke Michael Tom, Hon Opia Joshua who is also a delegate of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, said the football talent hunt annual competition was his own contribution to sustainable peace and human capacity development among the youths in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, saying that the event has brought about drastic positive behavioral change among the participating club sides, just as he appealed to corporate organizations to invest in sport as a tool for social integration and mobilization.
He thanked the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Gen. Boroh for his pragmatic leadership style that has seen hundreds of youths in the Niger Delta region being empowered, having hope of a brighter future through the several empowerment packages, ranging from agriculture to sports, education and vocational skills.
Highpoint of the event was the conferred of awards on Gen. Boroh, HRM, King Ateke Tom and others for their outstanding service to humanity.
Recall that the opening match of the competition between Ndemili United versus Utagba Ogbe United which ended 4-1 against Ndemili United, while the friendly match between visiting Allstars of Okochiri and host Allstars of Kwale ended goalless draw.
