AMNESTY COORDINATOR EULOGIZES KING ATEKE TOM, CALLS FOR EFFECTIVE COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE AT THE GRASSROOTS
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (Rtd) has commended the newly installed Amayanabo of Okochiri town, in Okrika local government area of Rivers State, HRM King Ateke Michael Tom for truly embracing peaceful option in resolving the Niger Delta question, assuring that the federal government was sincerely committed to the sustainable peace, stability and development of the region under a peaceful atmosphere.
Gen. Boroh, who led a high powered delegation from the Presidential Amnesty Office to Okochiri town to honour the former militant leader, during his official coronation, applauded King Ateke Tom, for his peace building efforts in the community and the state at large, saying that the Presidential Amnesty Office was so proud to identify with him on his day of honour and conferment as the new King by his people, whom he has always stood for in time past.
The Presidential aide also commended the Rivers state government for the official recognition of the stool, noting that traditional leaders, being the custodians of the sacrosanct rich cultural heritage, which includes the valuable traditions, practices, knowledge and skills, that stem from the long history of the Okrika people, through interactions with many other cultural, traditional and economic environments.
He opined that while local government councils were responsible for the provisions of basic amenities at the grassroots level, the roles of traditional leadership and institutions should be incorporated as integral component of harmonizing relationships between traditional rulers and the state government in assigning specific roles to play in the development of the rural economy.
Gen. Boroh, who called for effective co-operative governance at the grassroots, maintained that such system of administration at the community level would further deepen co-operation, healthy interpersonal communication and better consultation between all organs of state and the traditional institutions.
According to the Amnesty boss, democratization of governance, decision-making, law making processes and decision implementation, would be impracticable without an effective participation of the traditional rulers, particularly in the development of traditional communities, pointing out that it would be inappropriate to reduce the powers of traditional rulers, particularly in matters of governance, as traditional leaders control vital resources such as land/environment and are engaged in very important roles in service delivery in the rural areas.
While thanking the people of Okochiri community for installing King Ateke Tom as their leader, he enjoined the community to rally round and support the new King to foster peace and harmony in the area and other areas of influence.
“The reason, being that traditional institution in any community remains the voice that articulates and translates the aspirations and interests of the people on matters of rural development and governance, and as such, the traditional institution cannot be immune to change and transformation”, the Gen. reiterated.

GEN. BOROH INSPECTS EQUIPMENT AT FG’S AMNESTY VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE IN ONDO STATE

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd) at the weekend embarked on inspection of facilities at the federal government’s Amnesty Programe vocational training centre located in Agadabga Obon-Arogbo in Ese-Odo local government area of Ondo State, informing that President Muhammandu Buhari’s sincere commitment to the peace and infrastructural development of the Niger Delta region has built confidence in the people of the Niger Delta region. Boroh who expressed the desirability to continue with the ongoing training and empowerment of delegates, promised to engage qualified beneficiaries of the educational scholarship scheme with first and second degrees in relevant disciplines as instructors and teachers both at the centre and in existing institutions in the community, with a view to filling existing manpower gap in the Niger Delta Region.    The Presidential aide assure

One area that has remained of utmost importance to the Presidential Amnesty Office is Agriculture. This is in line with the presidential initiative on exploring available potentials in the sector to grow the national economy.  The Amnesty vigorously pursuing partnerships with relevant agroallied groups to among other things encourage the youth of the Niger Delta to embrace commercial agriculture. Some of the key partners include the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the National Bio-Technology Development center. Delegates have been empowered by the office to begin fishery, poultry and crop farming while thousands of delegates yet to be trained are now being deployed into Agriculture.
