The Ondo State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists
(NUJ), on Saturday (September 10, 2017), conferred on the Special
Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential
Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd), the Niger Delta
Ambassador of Peace Award, as a side event of the Second Niger Delta Council
Meeting, hosted in Akure, capital of Ondo state, in recognition of his
pragmatic peace building initiatives in the Niger Delta region, since assuming
office two years ago.
Giving reasons for the award on the Amnesty Coordinator, Ondo
State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. James Sowole said Council
arrived at the decision to honour Gen. Boroh, after going thorough
some of his activities in the Amnesty Office, particularly, the human
capacity building programmes in health, sports, agriculture, automobile,
tourism and hospitality, aviation, among several vocational programmes, adding
that the council was impressed with the establishment of a liaison office and a
24hrs call centre, with a view to connecting with the people at the grassroots.
The NUJ chairman, who described Gen. Boroh as Mr. Peace in the
Niger Delta, appealed for support in the areas of facilitating specialized
trainings for journalists in peace journalism, while assuring the Special
Adviser of the council’s full cooperation in reporting activities of the
Presidential Amnesty Programme in the region, particularly in Ondo state.
Responding, Gen. Boroh, who dedicated the award to God, thanked
the council for finding him worthy for the recognition as Niger Delta
Ambassador of Peace, at a time when the region is being stabilized to allow for
meaningful infrastructural development to take place, noting that the successes
so far recorded in the Presidential Amnesty Programme were made possible
because of the strong commitment President Muhammadu Buhari has demonstrated
towards achieving sustainable peace and development in the Niger Delta region.
He said the amnesty programme has entered its third phase, being
reintegration, after completing the disarmament and demobilization stages,
pointing out that the federal government’s huge investment in peace building
and stabilization in the Niger Delta were well intended, adding that no amount
of funds is too much to achieve sustainable peace in the region.
Gen. Boroh promised to support journalists in the Niger Delta
region to enable them report events in the region better, reiterating that no
meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of conflicts.
He therefore called on the people of the region, particularly,
the youths to key into the new vision of the federal government and embrace
peace in order to achieve meaningful development.
