AMNESTY BOSS TELLS DELEGATES TO EXPLOIT MARKET OPPORTUNITIES IN FISH FARMING… JUST AS HE ASSURES DELEGATES OF THEIR EMPOWERMENT PACKAGES

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd) has enjoined beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme to take advantage of the market opportunities in fish farming and processing, adding that the current trend of rising fish prices in the market make the fish farming venture an increasingly lucrative and viable business.
The Amnesty boss, represented by his senior reintegration officer, Mr. Jude Gbabayor, during the graduation ceremony of eighteen delegates who underwent a month empowerment training programme on fish farming and processing at the Shongai Farm, Amukpe, Delta state on Thursday, September 07, 2017 advised the beneficiaries of the Amnesty Programme not to trade their future for temporary gains that were not sustainable.
Gen. Boroh, who urged the trained delegates in aquaculture and processing to exploit the fast growing market for tilapia and catfish farming, noted that the increasing demand for fish (fresh and smoked) by households, restaurants, hotels and exporters, has severely outstripped production and the capacities of local fish farmers to satisfy the expanding local and international markets.
While commending the delegates for their peaceful conduct throughout the training programme, he assured them that the Amnesty Office is poised to establishing fish farms for them as part of the empowerment package for all trained delegates in the programme.
In his remarks, the General Manager of Shongai Farms, Delta, Engineer Usenu Afonughe Ighofimoni, said the training exposed the trainees to several as aspects of agriculture including fish processing, how to set up businesses and manage their farms.
“We also taught them financial accounting, how take care of fingerlings, how to set up a good pond and manage it, in addition to managing exotic vegetables, among others”.
Earlier, the Representative of the Vendor, Huntino Nigeria Limited and Coordinator of the training programme, Chief Chiekem Daphey, who thanked the federal government for sustaining the Amnesty programme, described the training as being compact and comprehensive, which according to him, “is in line with the needs assessment of the youths in the Niger Delta region”.
He said he looked forward to further mentoring opportunities with the delegates after they have been empowered by the Amnesty Office to establish their own businesses.
While thanking the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme for his vision and foresight, beneficiaries of the training programme, Adeze Daphey and Kele Chinoye, who counted themselves as being lucky to be part of the empowerment training, described it as a very big privilege, even as they promised to make good use of the knowledge acquired.
It would be recalled that market opportunities in fish processing has indicated that “more than 500,000 kilograms of smoked fish is exported to the UK alone every year from West Africa, while the annual smoked fish exports to the US and Europe is in excess of 3 million kilograms”,
