AMNESTY OFFICE DEPLOYS MAIDEN BATCH OF 100 TRAINEES IN TOURISM/HOSPITALITY; EMPOWERS ADDITIONAL 40 IN SMES
A first tranche of 100 delegates from a designated total number
of one thousand have been deployed by the Presidential Amnesty Office for
training at the International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality in Yenogoa,
Bayelsa State.
The training is projected to explore the diverse business
opportunities inherent in the rich cultural heritage of African societies while
particularly emphasising the peculiarity of the Niger Delta eco-system for
tourism.
The special adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator
of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh who officially
flagged off the exercise, described the training as a good example of applying
home-grown technique to expand the knowledge base of youth in the region and
develop skills capable of improving their lives and the local economy.
He was quite emphatic on the immense opportunities in Tourism in
Nigeria and the need for growing a breed of core professionals in the
hospitality sector. He urged the trainees to take advantage of the opportunity
now within their grasps to develop themselves into experts in the tourism and
hospitality business. Gen. Boroh said ''as the Niger Delta region continues to
grow and expand, the corresponding influx of people and rise in population
makes tourism and the hospitality business a prime money making machine.'' He
said the training at the institute therefore becomes imperative as the
participating youth will form part of the labour force to nurture a vibrant
tourism and hospitality industry in the Niger Delta.
The commissioner for Tourism and Development in Bayelsa State
Hon. Ebiere Irene Musa an address at the event encouraged the former agitators
to embrace the training with commitment, focus and strong zeal to succeed. She
expressed optimism over the fate of successful trainees explaining that Nigeria
is replete with abundant opportunities for them to ply their trade.
Hon. Ebiere also applauded the Federal government for continued
commitment towards the development of the Niger Delta through social and
economic empowerment of the region's youth and affirmed the eagerness of the
state government to further drive this agenda.
The rector of the International Institute of Tourism and
Hospitality,Mr Samuel Timi had in an opening address reiterated the institute
readiness to deliver on its mandate to produce professionals capable of making
Nigeria a reference point in the business of Tourism and hospitality. The
training for each batch of delegates totalling one thousand to be trained at
the institute will last for one month. It is envisaged that the trainees will
become employers of labour themselves after being empowered to become small
business owners by the Presidential Amnesty Office.
Meanwhile, Presidential aide, Brig.Gen. Paul Boroh has
called for an increase in youth economic empowerment initiatives in the Niger
Delta.
Gen. Boroh made the call shortly after commissioning some fish
farms and commodity shops in Okrika, Rivers State designed as business start-up
kits for 40 ex-agitators who recently concluded their vocational training under
the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
He said the Federal government remains focused on its part in
helping young people develop skills to start small and medium scale enterprises
in order to helpe them find their foot at the teething stage of these
businesses. Gen. Boroh described the empowerment initiative under the Amnesty
Office as a unique complement to consolidate the overall development of
affected delegates targeted at making them positive contributors to the growth
of the Nigerian society.
He revealed that thousands of delegates have already been
empowered with start up kits to open new businesses which are duly registered
at the Coporate Affairs Commission, CAC with a promise to empower more in 2017.
